Why It's OK to Get Married in Your 20s

Age ain't nothin' but a number.

Disclaimer:  The purpose of this article isn't to say that you MUST get married in your 20s.  Just that if you're ready to get hitched, don't let age deter you.

Your 20s are a great time for happiness, finding yourself (whatever the heck that means), and using y.o.l.o. as an excuse to do irresponsible stuff.  A lot of people think it's dumb to even consider marriage during this fragile age period.  They may be right.  Still, there are some who happen to find love but wonder if they're too young and inexperienced to take the big leap of faith.  Here's why they're not:

1.  You're old enough to know what you want.

By the time you hit your 20s, you pretty much know what you want in a partner.  College  is behind you and you've been through the wringer.  You may not be ready to settle down, but you know what works and what doesn't.  If you are ready, though, don't let the fear of thinking you'll want something else in the future stop you.  Trust yourself and your partner.

2.  It's not illegal to have a cheap wedding.

One of the biggest things holding young couples back from jumping the broom is the concern about not being able to afford a wedding equipped with diamond-crusted wine glasses and Kanye West as the MC.  There are ways to have a nice but inexpensive wedding, like really inexpensive.  Try some of them out.

3.  You have more time to focus on you.

This may seem contradictory because one of the biggest excuses for not committing at a young age is to have time to focus on yourself.  The truth, however, is that when you're not worried about having to constantly keep your dates entertained, you have a whole lot more time to focus on yourself and your career.  You also have someone there to  bounce ideas off of and give you advice when it comes to tough decisions.

4.  Father time.

This horse has probably been beaten to death a million times.  I was actually in attendance at the last funeral.  However, it must be beaten once more.  The longer you wait to get married and have kids, the harder it will be for you to have them in the future.  This isn't just for women.  Guys can't throw a ball to their sons with a cane.  There's nothing cool about being Matthew Knowles.

5.  The grass isn't always greener on the other side.

Being the most eligible bachelor can be fun for some people.  You can do what you want and don't have anyone to answer to.  However, there are always those times when you're at the bar by yourself, tired of having to do the pick-up routine once again.  Sometimes you want to go to the party or company banquet with someone on your arm, and that one-night-stand you met downtown just won't cut it.  The pickings only get slimmer as you age, and there aren't a whole lot of people on their deathbeds wishing they partied a little more.  Find true love and don't be afraid to make that giant leap.
