The Two Reasons Valentine's Day is Necessary

Why the holiday a lot of people hate is needed.

Walking through the mean streets of Walmart, the big red balloons, overpriced body wash baskets, and Russell Stover chocolates that people buy every year even though they don't really taste that good are already on display.  This can only mean one thing:  Valentine's Day is right around the corner.  You're probably still trying to recover from the holiday season, and are busy making up excuses for New Year's resolutions you've already broken, but there's no time for that now because there's another holiday to prepare for.  Most people (i.e. guys) feel this way, which leads them to think that Valentine's Day should go the way of the word "yolo" or "MySpace" (or even worse, writing the word "yolo" on your "MySpace" page), but there are at least two reasons why Valentine's Day is absolutely necessary.

The first is that, like it or not, Valentine's Day helps people in "situationships" understand the status of their relationships.  About a month beforehand (i.e. now), the Valentine dead period starts.  What is this, you may ask?  Well, it's quite simple.  The dead period is when the person you're dating, kicking it with, or bragging to your friends about because you think he or she is "the one" when you haven't actually seen each other in person yet mysteriously falls off the map for about a month, only to return on or around February 21st like nothing happened.  This is usually preceded by fake arguments over trivial things.  Conversely, this can also let you know that things are going well and you have nothing to worry about.  We all strive to know where we stand in people's lives.  Well, now you know.

The other reason is because Valentine's Day teaches us how to date again.  In the age of Tinder and the hookup culture, it's nice to be able to find a day where you get to be taken on an actual date.  After writing that, I just realized how incredibly sad that is.  C'est la vie and whatnot.  But anywho, maybe these dates can lead to more dates, or even spice up a relationship that's been on a downward spiral.  Maybe.  Maybe not.  But one thing is for sure, after February 14th, you'll know.  Happy Friday!
